Circular Level

Shoe prints, tire tracks or other impressions on the ground or other flat surfaces need to be photographed with the camera level with the surface. This method insures that the final photograph of the impression will not be distorted at one end. To prevent this from happening, place a circular level onto the back of a camera that has been mounted on a tripod. Adjust the camera until the bubble in the circular level is centered. This will insure that the camera is parallel with the impression you are photographing.

You can purchase a circular level at a local hardware store for around $1.99.
